Georgian Presidential site crosses the Atlantic | | 2008/08/12 | | The website of Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has been moved to the Atlanta-based hosting company Tulip systems in a move that is hoped to help combat the potential risk of Russian cyber attacks.
It has been alleged that such attacks are currently underway and, according to Tulip chief executive Nino Doijashvili, Russian hackers "flooded and blocked" the original servers which were based within the independent democratic country's borders.
Georgian-born Ms Doijashvili was on holiday in the country when the current unrest began over the disputed territory of South Ossetia and was on hand to offer her services after contacting the government directly.
A deal was quickly struck and now president.gov.ge and rustavi2.com - a prominent TV channel - have been hosted by the Tulip servers since Saturday.
Website monitoring has revealed that attacks are still being attempted at the Atlanta site which have been traced back to St Petersburg and Moscow.
Meanwhile, Renesys, a company in New Hampshire that maps internet pathways, has said that web routes to Georgia had shown intermittent phases of activity over the weekend.
Georgia's web connections are shared with Azerbaijan and Turkey and the Azerbaijan connection continues through Russia before joining with the internet at large.
But Earl Zmijewski, general manager of the internet data division at Renesys, said that there were "no apparent attempts to limit traffic via Russia". |
