Gmail reliability questioned | | 2008/08/22 | | Experts are beginning to doubt whether Google's email service Gmail is reliable enough to meet their needs.
Google's free email service suffered its third network outage since the beginning of the month on August 15th, which saw users denied access to their accounts for at least 24-hours.
Benjamin Bach, a system developer at Fair Allocation of Infotech Resources (FAIR) in Denmark, explained that the outage had significant ramifications for the organisation's distribution work in developing countries.
He told Macworld: "Seeing such a long outage during the very first few days makes us wonder if a free solution provided by Google is actually 'pro' enough for us.
"We cannot correspond with schools in Africa or partners in Denmark and afford being out-of-mail for a whole day."
Gmail users were also left unable to monitor website downtime on Gmail and had no way of knowing how long the problem was going to last, because Google did not keep them informed.
The outages are also likely to raise concerns over the reliability of the software-as-a-service (SaaS) industry as a whole, of which Google is a huge proponent.
