Google's privacy policy under the microscope

2008/08/04

Individual privacy has come under scrutiny by the US National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) following a response from Google over a lawsuit launched against it by Pennsylvania couple.

Having monitored the website, Aaron and Christine Boring are seeking damages of around $25,000 (£12,500) after Google posted images of their house on Street View, saying that their action was "reckless conduct" which caused "mental suffering" and damaged the value of their home.

According to the BBC, court documents defending the lawsuit suggested: "Today's satellite-image technology means that even in today's desert, complete privacy does not exist".

Google's assertion that it takes the concept of privacy seriously has been met with scepticism by the chairman of the NLPC, Ken Boehm who said: "Google's hypocrisy is breathtaking.

"Perhaps in Google's world privacy does not exist, but in the real world individual privacy is fundamentally important and is being chipped away bit by bit every day by companies like Google."

A Google spokesman said: "Google respects an individual's right to privacy; we have privacy protections built into all of our products.

"When plaintiffs discovered these images, rather than using the simple removal option Google affords, they sued Google for invasion of privacy, trespass, negligence and conversion."ADNFCR-1362-ID-18713887-ADNFCR
