Google named UK's top internet brand | | 2008/07/22 | | Search engine Google has been named the top consumer brand in the UK.
The US firm came first in the latest Superbrands survey, beating Microsoft into second place for the first time.
German car-maker Mercedes Benz came in at third place, with the BBC and British Airways making up the rest of the top five.
Despite a recent increase in online shopping, supermarket brands failed to make an impact.
Tesco dropped 230 places to the 71st position and Sainsbury's - which recently closed its online shopping operations due to an internet outage - also slipped down the ranks.
"Lifestyle brands, particularly those in the technology sector, have considerably more sway with the public than everyday staples such as the supermarkets, which now seem further than ever from the affections of the British people," explained chairman of the Superbrands Council Stephen Cheliotis. "The results are also a further sign that Google is continuing its dominance in the UK. It is clear that Google is the brand that people value at work and in their personal lives."
