Government backs calls for e-crime unit | | 2008/10/02 | | The government has announced it will proceed with plans for a centralised police unit to deal specifically with crime committed by electronic means, or 'e-crime'.
Proposals for the Police Central E-crime Unit (PCEU) have been in existence for approximately a year, but funding problems have delayed the launch of the new unit until now.
The unit will receive £3.5 million from the government and £3.9 million from the Metropolitan Police Service, with a planned operational start in spring 2009.
These new measures to tackle online crime highlight the need for a comprehensive approach to internet security and stability, in which effective website monitoring software can play an important role.
Commenting on the news, the attorney general Baroness Scotland, said: "It is widely recognised that e-crime is the most rapidly expanding form of criminality and knows no borders."
PCEU will work in conjunction with two other newly-created policing bodies, the National Fraud Reporting Centre and the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau once both have become fully operational. |
