Government proposes internet data law | | 2008/05/19 | | Prime minister Gordon Brown had proposed a law which would require communications companies to keep records of email and internet use.
The new Communications Data Bill follows a statutory instrument which will see the European Data Retention Directive enacted by home secretary Jacqui Smith in October of this year, meaning that companies will be required to retain data concerning location and traffic of telephone calls for up to two years.
It is hoped that taking such a step will contribute to the detection of crime and protection of national security by keeping up with changing technology.
According to the government: "The Bill would bring the legislative framework on access to communications data up to date with changes taking place in the telecommunications industry and the move to using Internet Protocol core networks."
Despite the new powers requested in the Bill, the government has insisted it will strike a balance between respecting "privacy and protecting the public".
