Hacked navy site aims to be back online soon | | 2010/02/04 | | A navy website that was taken offline after it was hacked should be back up and running within two weeks.
The network, which includes the site Navylifepnw.com and other computers within the welfare and recreation department, was taken down two months ago by the Navy Cyber Defence Operations Command, Kitsap Sun reported.
Commenting on the breach of security, Navy Region Northwest spokesman Sean Hughes said: "Someone wilfully injected something into the network in an attempt to compromise network information."
Visitors to the site's homepage are greeted with a message reading:"Navylifepnw.com is temporarily out of service. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience." Housing, education and recreation information is included on the site. Luckily no classified information is contained on it.
Programme and event information can be found on the Facebook pages for Kitsap, Whidbey Island and Everett. Links to these pages can be found on the landing page for the original site.
Mr Hughes announced damage to the network and its systems was minor and that he is taking efforts to increase its defences against any such compromise again. One way a future hack could be detected would be employing website monitoring services. |
