Hacker attack takes Russian newspaper offline for days | | 2010/02/03 | | One of Russia's highest profile newspapers has been experiencing six days of downtime due to a hacker attack.
Outspoken opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta, which frequently contains articles criticising Russian authorities, has been posting articles on other sites since it went down.
A Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack was to blame for the site being brought down.
During the attack hackers bombarded the site with a large number of data requests that resulted in other users being unable to access it.
"We filed our complaint with the interior ministry, the investigative committee, the prosecutor general and the FSB security service and we are waiting for their replies," newspaper spokeswoman Nadezhda Prusenkova said.
In 2007 similar types of attacks were experienced by Estonian government sites after the country moved a Soviet war monument.
In January the website of the Jewish newspaper Jewish Chronicle was attacked by hackers that replaced graphics on the homepage with a Paletinian flag and message reading: "Hacked by Palestinian Mujaheeds."
Downtime experienced by such sites can be picked up on by website monitoring services that check the appearance of a site's pages. |
