Hacker taps rapper site

2008/09/03

The list of celebrities whose online presence has been compromised has just become longer with the news that US rap star Soulja Boy has been issued with a demand that he pay a hacker to restore control of his MySpace profile.

Proving that the celebrity lifestyle is not all champagne and Humvees, Soulja Boy joins Justin Timberlake, Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Alicia Keys whose websites and profiles are known to have been compromised in the past, highlighting the need for website monitoring services.

The rapper refused to act on a demand from the cyber-vandals that he pay them $2,500 (£1,400) to return control of the site and reacted by wiping out the genuine content, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

As well as publishing details of his email account and various passwords, they also posted bogus and obscene content on his website claiming that the star cared little for his fans and issuing a declaration that he was homosexual.

Soulja Boy explained the incident on a YouTube posting and even went as far as to say that a $10,000 (£5,600) reward would be given in exchange for the hacker's identity but his record label - Interscope - had demanded that MySpace return the account, and the hacker had already been caught.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18761340-ADNFCR
