Hackers take the shine off chrome | | 2008/09/04 | | Security issues have already surfaced just a day after the launch of Google's new web browser, Chrome.
The posting of a proof of concept on the security forum website EvilFingers by security researcher Rishi Narang has said that among its vulnerabilities is one which allows inclined hackers to crash the site.
More worryingly, malware could also be downloaded as a result of Google's use of an older version of the webKit browser technology, which has been used by other search sites and seems to carry the same fallibility, PC Advisor reports.
The issues were first discovered by Aviv Raff who explained that problem rests with the way the new browser downloads files and in the way that Windows handles them.
A default setting on Chrome places downloaded files into a folder before displaying a download bar on the browser page which users click if they choose to open the file.
This allows Windows to provide a warning about the possibility of the file having malicious content.
Java Archive (JAR) files however, can be opened when a user clicks on the download bar bypassing the default warning.
A spokeswoman from Google said in a statement that, as a default measure, Chrome downloads files into a separate folder rather than the user's desktop as a means to avoid some security issues.
An additional safety feature of Chrome is that the browser can be set to ask where files should be saved to before the downloading process, she said. |
