Half of firms to freeze IT budgets in 2009 | | 2008/09/22 | | 50 per cent of firms will maintain levels of IT spending in 2009, new research has indicated.
In a survey by Datamonitor, 37 per cent of firms said they would be increasing their budgets in this area, while only 13 per cent said they would spend less on IT next year.
Speaking to Computer Weekly, Datamonitor's Daniel Okubo said the trend is not a "short-term phenomenon".
"For the past couple of years enterprises have been cutting back IT budget increases as they adopt a more cautious viewpoint of the global economy," he said.
A potential strain on firm's IT budgets is the losses incurred by outages in their online services, something which can be significantly reduced by the use of website monitoring.
Companies which offer flexible working and use mobile internet are among those likely to increase spending.
In August, IT analyst Gartner predicted spending would increase eight per cent from last year, reaching a total of £1.8 ($3.4) trillion. |
