Increase in broadband speeds means better site designs | | 2010/01/06 | | A recent study has found that the average speed of broadband internet connection in the UK rose last year.
Broadband comparison site broadband.co.uk carried out tests which revealed that speeds increased by 22 per cent
In December 2008 the average speed was found to be 3.67Mbps and in December last year this rose to 4.478Mbps.
However this new record average for broadband speeds means that site designers and web hosts should work harder to make their sites appeal to their audience, according to managing director of digital agency Design UK Leigh Whitney.
"Sites must drive action, and provide journeys that will accommodate for explorers - those who are browsing, hunters - those who are looking for a certain type of product, and trackers - who know exactly what they want to purchase and are ready to spend money," he explained.
The expert also pointed out that clear signposting and being clever in the way typography is used can help to provide a visual indication of content beyond a link.
As well as ensuring the design of a website is driving action around its various pages, it is important to put website monitoring services in place so that if a site experiences down time the site owner is informed and visitors are affected by the problem for less time. |
