Internet downtime minimal post-Gustav | | 2008/09/05 | | The cost of internet downtime due to Hurricane Gustav has thankfully been mild compared to Katrina which hit Louisiana in 2005 but outages have occurred as Gustav left its mark on the state.
Parts of cable firm Charter Communication's Louisiana network "disappeared from the internet" on Monday according to internet pathway tracking company Renesys Corp.
Spokesman for the cable firm Marty Richmond was able to confirm that an outage had occurred but that it was purely down to the loss of power in the area due to the freak weather conditions.
He added that permission to access the evacuated areas had hampered the assessment and repair mission.
Meanwhile, Sigmund Solares, chief executive of Intercosmos Media Group Inc - based in downtown New Orleans - said that Gustav had caused the loss of almost a third of its bandwidth but reserve capacity meant that there was barely a blip to inconvenience the near two million websites that it hosts.
Commercial power was lost for six minutes and was backed up by diesel generators compared to the ten days of downtime caused by Katrina. |
