Internet outage leads to two-day email loss

2008/09/11

Failures in data-storage disks resulted in a two-day email loss for subscribers to regional internet service provider Win.Net.

In addition to the data loss subscribers still using dial-up services lost their web access completely, while many websites crashed. High-speed services were not affected in the same way.

Although the reasons for the outage are still not entirely clear, the president of Win.Net, Michael Tague, assured subscribers that there was no permanent data loss.

Mr Tague told the Courier-Journal: "We certainly apologize for the disruption. We had several things fail, which cascaded and ultimately overwhelmed the system."

Mr Tague added that the system would benefit from new parts delivered overnight, as the supply depot happened to be situated next to a UPS hub.

Website monitoring is under way to ensure that affected sites are brought back online as soon as possible, although the repair process has taken several days. The incident took place on Saturday morning, meaning customers were without email for the whole weekend.

Google's Gmail service also recently experienced problems, with users unable to access the programme for 15 hours.
