Internet outages have 'severe effect' on businesses

2009/07/01

Nearly all small businesses said an hour-long internet outage would have some impact on their company, it has been reported.

A recent survey by Egnyte found that one in five small businesses said an outage of this timeframe would have a "severe" effect on their firm, while 51 per cent said it would be "moderate", reports bmighty.com

Website monitoring services are often used by companies to reduce downtime, but more businesses are now turning to cloud computing, which can be affected by internet outages.

However, the survey revealed that nine out of ten small businesses do not have complete trust in the cloud computing, citing concerns about not being able to acces data during an outage.

An IT expert recently claimed that server downtime can damage a business' profitability as well as its reputation.

Chris Mather, group operations manager at CMather.com, said: "A website that is too slow to load or which is characterised by frequent downtimes can irritate customers that visit your website, thus losing potential business."
