Internet reaches 40th anniversary of its first outage

2009/10/30

The internet has reached a major milestone – the 40th anniversary of the first email message ever sent.

Back in 1969, computer science professor Leonard Kleinrock managed to send a one-word message from a host computer to another networked system at the Stanford Research Institute in California.

Quite appropriately, just the first two letters of the word 'login' arrived at the intended destination - as the system crashed following 'lo'.

Website monitoring services may not have been useful for this original, primitive network, but since the internet boom of the 1990s they have become almost indispensable.

CMather.com group operations manager Chris Mather recently claimed that website downtime can damage a business's profitability as well as its reputation.

"An excellent website is of no use if it is not backed by an equally competent web-hosting solution," he claimed.

"A website that is too slow to load or which is characterised by frequent downtimes can irritate customers that visit your website, thus losing potential business."ADNFCR-1362-ID-19435679-ADNFCR
