Internet users urged to protect privacy | | 2008/06/20 | | Internet users have a "responsibility" to protect their own privacy when browsing the web, according to the Social Media Portal.
The co-founder and editor of the global media mapping resource, Tim Gibbon, has highlighted the number of different independent steps browsers can take to improve the level of privacy they enjoy when navigating the internet.
Guidance-giving resources recommended by Mr Gibbon include the Center for Democracy and Technology and the Get Safe Online website.
He commented: "Ultimately, users need to be vigilant and protect their online privacy as much as they are able, and not rely upon government or otherwise to take sole responsibility.
Continuing: "We all need to have a commonsense approach when using the internet."
Other respected guidelines for improving online privacy came from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), who published the "top twelve ways to protect your online privacy" in 2002.
