Kids are the new pirates

2008/07/16

New research has found that the majority of internet piracy is being perpetrated by 11 to 24-year-olds and that most file-sharers are around 14-years-old.

The Real Thing study by Microsoft showed that over half - 54 per cent - of children polled, use file-sharing sites as opposed to only 15 per cent of adults.

More worryingly, 20 per cent of children obtained illegal goods through open auction websites.

Because the legal versions are seen to be too expensive, the general attitude is that pirated goods are preferred and even attain legitimate status because so many computer users in their peer groups use them.

More than 60 per cent said that they favoured pirated goods and 20 per cent see no difference between the legal and the illegal versions.

Given a choice, younger computer users went for the free versions of 'digital property' if it was possible to do so, reports computing.co.uk.

Head of anti-piracy at Microsoft in the UK, Michala Wardell, said: "Parents should ensure they are aware of what their children are doing online.

"File sharing is a great technology but parents should make sure that their children are doing it legally but I would also stress that without fully understanding the risks of running illegal computer programs, kids could lose more than just their homework."ADNFCR-1362-ID-18687290-ADNFCR
