LHC hackers spurned by monitoring staff | | 2008/09/15 | | Hackers were "one step away" from accessing the Cern Large Hadron Collider's (LHC) central computer system before they were thwarted, it has been revealed.
A group calling themselves the Greek Security Team infiltrated the $6 billion project's system last week in what is widely believed only to be a demonstration that the LHC computer infrastructure is hackable.
The LHC, which is designed to recreate conditions at the Big Bang, courted controversy when it was switched on last week, with several scientists claiming that it could create a black hole that would destroy the earth.
Hackers infiltrated the system shortly after the LHC was switched on for the first time on September 10th, however, they were thwarted by website monitoring staff before they were able to access the central computer system.
James Giles, spokesperson for Cern, told the Telegraph: "There seems to be no harm done. From what [the computer security team] can tell, it was someone making the point that CMS was hackable."
