Lightning strike causes multiple newspaper website outages | | 2009/07/08 | | A lightning strike has resulted in all websites being operated by one US publishing company to suffer from an outage.
It was during a thunderstorm on Sunday that lightning ran through phone lines and hit the router of the Anniston Star, which affected all websites operated by Consolidated Publishing.
All sites suffered an outage and all offices were left without internet connections - news which could be of interest to those considering using website monitoring services.
The sites affected concerned those for the Talladega Daily Home, the Cleburne News, the Jacksonville News, the Piedmont Journal and the St. Clair Times
Lisa Powell, director of corporate communications for Deltacom, the internet services provider for Consolidated Publishing, said: "It is not known whether the lightning strike affected other Deltacom customers in the area. The company does not release information concerning customer accounts for legal reasons."
A fire at the Fisher Plaza data centre hosting centre in Seattle recently caused internet facilities around the world to suffer an outage.
