Mac outage could be due to re-branding | | 2008/06/04 | | An outage experienced on Apple's .Mac mail could have been due to the expected re-branding of the email service, according to reports currently circulating.
Insiders say that server work was the reason for the outage, which surfaced on Monday (June 2nd) and lasted for six hours.
The .Mac service was recently given the alias .Me, to fit in with Apple's marketing of the iPhone.
Commenting on a possible re-branding of the email service, CNN's Philip Elmer-Dewitt said: "Apple's best chance to prove that it really does understand today's world wide web, and that it can do for social networking, cloud computing and online services what it has done in the past for PCs, portable music players and cell phones: put the focus on the user's experience and make complex technology seem utterly and delightfully transparent."
In many cases, website monitoring services can prevent unexpected website outages.
