Michael Jackson's death causes 'internet meltdown' | | 2009/06/26 | | The internet suffered a widespread slowdown as the news of the death of Michael Jackson spread around the world.
It is impossible to know how many of the sites that experienced problems were using website monitoring services, but it has been reported that Google was one of the worst hit.
The search engine giant told the BBC it even thought the site was under attack due to the high volume of users logging on to look for news.
A spokesperson told the news provider: "It's true that between approximately 14:40 and 15:15 local time, some Google News users experienced difficulty accessing search results for queries related to Michael Jackson and saw the error page."
The error page carried a message which read: "Your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application."
News emerged of the King of Pop's death late last night in the UK.
He was rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest but later died, aged 50.
