Microsoft product keys inaccessible due to site outage | | 2009/12/22 | |
The website where Microsoft stores its product licensing keys has been inaccessible due to an outage.
As a result Microsoft partners that sell volume licensing products have been prevented from retrieving the keys required to activate products since December 6th.
Since the problem was detected the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Centre has been undergoing site maintenance, trade title CRN reported.
Business owner Henry Craven said: "Basically, it's not possible to get a key out of that system at the moment."
He also told CRN that his business has not been directly impacted but that he has been in contact with global partners that have been frustrated by the problem.
The Microsoft blog told users that as well as the site undergoing maintenance, the online experience is being upgraded. This will create "a single portal to manage all volume licensing agreements and IDs, download product keys, and access software assurance benefits", the company explained.
Such an outage can cause major disruption for an organisation such as Microsoft, which relies heavily on its partners being able to access its site. To get the problem repaired as quickly as possible, putting website monitoring services in place is advisable.
