Mobile Java flaws 'for sale' | | 2008/08/18 | | An internet security researcher has taken an unorthodox step to "gather funds for creating a cutting-edge security research centre in Poland".
Adam Gowdiak has opted against seeking help from venture capitalists and instead, has attempted to generate revenue by finding multiple flaws in mobile Java and then asking large corporations to pay for him to reveal his findings.
The founder and chief executive of Security Explorations wrote of the flaws on his website and has published the preliminary pages of his 178-page report but is now requesting 20,000 (£15, 800) from mobile companies Nokia and Sun to reveal details of the vulnerabilities.
According to ZDNet UK, he wrote that he had created two codes able to attack Java's weaknesses "used by Sun and Nokia in their products".
So far, the mobile companies have remained tight-lipped over the claims but the recent addition of a FAQ page on Security Exploration' website states that it supports highlighting these types of flaws for the benefit of overall internet security.
The firm also claims to be undeterred by the threat of legal action by saying: "If a given vendor prefers to throw money for lawyers instead of spending it to improve the security of their products, we can't do anything about it." |
