Mozilla breaks its own record

2008/07/07

Internet technologies firm, Mozilla has entered the record books by posting the largest number of software downloads in a single 24-hour period.

The record breaking download frenzy for Firefox 3.0 took place in June.

Logs from download servers were screened and, after figures were checked to exclude duplicate and unfinished downloads, the official count stood at 8,002,530.

Head of marketing, Paul Kim said: "The enthusiasm and creativity of Firefox fans was key to making this happen."

While Gareth Deaves of Guinness World Records added: "This is an extremely impressive accomplishment."

Over 9,000 downloads per minute were being handled when the servers were at their busiest and after only five hours, the firm had surpassed their own record set by Firefox 2.0 at 1.6 million in October 2006.

However, at around the same time DV Labs/Tipping Point reported the possibility a defect that could potentially let a hacker invade a PC if the user clicked on a rigged link.

But Mr Kim told BBC News: "Firefox users are safe because we have a patch in the works and we hope to release it very soon."

Marketing manager, Mary Colvig said that celebrations would be on hold until Guinness's authentication certificate was actually in their hands.

"I think most of us are just going to try and get to bed early now that we have the confirmation - We are all tired," she said.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18670883-ADNFCR
