Myanmar's conflict with dissidents reaches cyberspace | | 2008/09/19 | | The ruling military junta in Myanmar has made a number of damaging attacks on dissident websites, according to Reuters.
One victim was the Thai journal Irrawaddy, which described the attacks as "very sophisticated" in a statement made using its back-up server.
Irrawaddy confirmed its web host, I-NET, had been the subject of "distributed denial-of-service" action and was overloaded by the sheer weight of the traffic aimed at the site.
The ability for such large scale activity and the nature of the attacks highlights the need for internet security and effective website monitoring.
Another of the targeted publications was the Oslo-based Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB), which covered last year's monk-lead protests and the subsequent military response.
Speaking to Reuters, DVB's Toe Zaw Latt said the attacks seemed to come from computers located in Russia and China, confirming the view that the junta has received training and assistance from Beijing and Moscow.
The attacks come one year after the ruling junta was forced to suppress protest from Buddhist monks, which resulted in at least 31 deaths. |
