New generation browser includes geolocation software | | 2008/10/09 | | Users of the website browser Firefox will now be able to access prototype geolocation software, it has been announced.
The software, called Geode, will allow the browser to pinpoint the specific geographical location of the user's computer.
Software maker Mozilla says this will then be able to help them find local services like restaurants when visiting a new town, for example.
This development stresses the importance of effective website monitoring software to ensure websites perform and reliable online services are maintained for users, especially given the greater flows of data which will take place as the functionality of the internet increases.
According to software analysts Net Applications, version 1.0 of Firefox was released in 2004 and as of last month its total share of the website browser market was 19.46 per cent,
Mozilla was keen to stress that users will have control over releasing their information and that privacy concerns have been addressed. An on-screen notice gives the user the option to accept or reject any request for information regarding its location.
"Imagine an RSS reader that knows the difference between home and work and automatically changes its behaviour appropriately," urges the software maker. |
