New initiative to get more women into IT | | 2008/09/22 | | A new programme aimed at increasing the number of women working in IT has been launched.
Called Doing IT Around the World, the new initiative gives an insight into the typical days of women in the industry covering a wide range of fields such as web design, open-source development and microelectronics.
On August 11th this year 36 women were followed in countries as diverse as Australia and Antarctica and their experiences highlighted the variety of roles available.
Founder Sonja Bernhardt explained that the idea had only become a reality because of the development of voice-over-internet protocol (VoIP) and the increasing popularity of social networking sites, which highlight the continued importance of website monitoring.
"Many people are just playing with these tools for fun instead of realising that you can have a global project," she explained.
In February, research conducted by e-skills, the government skills council for IT and telecoms, found that female IT professionals earn on average 20 per cent less than their male counterparts.
IT recruitment specialist Simon Page commented on the findings: "A male analyst will be paid the same as a female analyst. It's just that we're not placing women into these technical roles." |
