Not enough website monitoring by parents | | 2008/08/05 | | Despite a recent government announcement that parents would be held accountable for their children's illegal internet downloading activity, a recent survey has discovered that parents are still not doing enough to monitor what their kids get up to online.
Security systems and parental control software have been recommended by Broadbandchoices.co.uk in the wake of the survey carried out by YouGov.
The broadband comparison site is concerned with illegal online activity but is also urging parents to monitor more closely to reinforce their child's online safety.
According to the survey, over 80 per cent of UK parents rely on their kids to tell them that they are surfing the net harmlessly and safely.
Product director of BroadbandChoices.co.uk Michael Phillips said: "We were surprised to learn that such a high proportion of parents heavily rely on verbal agreements to ensure their children's online activities are safe and legal. Children are often more tech-savvy than their parents and the click of a mouse can take them anywhere."
Of the 11 to 16-year-olds polled, nearly half (48 per cent) said they download music while 45 per cent formed new relationships using chat rooms.
Download Monitors can be used to log all downloads being made. |
