Nothing is happening to solve internet breaches, says security expert

2008/09/01

A rift between federal and corporate America has been exposed over who is best equipped and prepared to tackle major vulnerabilities in the internet, an expert has claimed.

A major retail hacking operation, sustained attacks on Georgian websites and 'Kaminsky's hole' have all combined to demonstrate the fragility of the internet but the issue remains low down on the 'to do' list of the federal government or the two principle Whitehouse candidates, reports the Chicago Tribune.

Former director of the National Cyber Security Division at the Department of Homeland Security Jerry Dixon told the newspaper: "This has got to be in the top five of national security priorities and nothing is happening."

Mr Dixon has added his voice to hundreds of others who are of the opinion that the government should be more pro-active in its efforts to protect corporate and private America from internal and external threats.

While the government has responded by saying that the private sector is better resourced to handle the problem, big firms are admitting that the problem is too big to tackle alone.

Experts also agree that while calls for greater communication between all parties go on, the sophistication level of hacking is growing and becoming increasingly adept.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18757062-ADNFCR
