O2 suspend online orders for iPhone | | 2008/07/14 | |
The Carphone Warehouse and O2 have both suffered so much from the "incredible demand" for the new iPhone that the retailers had to suspend online orders last week.
As a result, UK buyers have experienced difficulty in obtaining the latest version of the smartphone device, reports the BBC.
The new cheaper, faster version went on sale in 22 countries worldwide but a problem with the O2-run online registration system created frustration among the many that were unable to activate their gadgets at Apple stores.
The glitch, according to website monitoring services, also plagued O2 stores but the firm, who are the sole firm offering the iPhone in the UK, were quick to assure that the problem had been dealt with.
An O2 spokesman said: "We had queues at most stores but where those queues exceeded the number of devices we had in the stock room, we let people at the back of the line know first thing so they wouldn't have to wait in vain."
On Friday morning, O2 had to put a contingency plan into operation when a system needed to register their customers for an O2 contract also went down.
iPhone's exclusive US carrier, AT&T said that planned in-store activation had been prevented by a world-wide problem with Apple's iTunes servers.
In Hong Kong, armoured guards stood watch over 500 handsets prior to sale. |
