One step closer to 100Gb internet | | 2008/09/29 | | The goal of transmitting traffic at 100 gigabits (Gb) per second looks significantly closer, it has emerged.
Experiments in Dallas in the US have successfully transmitted data at 100Gb for over 1,040 kilometres.
US telecommunications provider Verizon and communications technology firm Nokia Siemens Networks conducted the joint trial using the latest fibre optic cabling, which is the most recent step in an industry-wide drive to increase the speed of internet traffic using the new technology.
The increasing speed of access to the internet highlights the need for effective website monitoring software to ensure that users' demand does not overload the capabilities of website severs.
"This is another groundbreaking milestone for Nokia Siemens Networks and Verizon's photonic networking expertise in shaping the development of a 100Gb commercial product," said Bernd Schumacher, head of Nokia Siemens Networks' IP Transport Business Unit.
The trail showed that the existing fibre optic network is capable of supporting these new high speeds, thereby reducing the need for expensive upgrading and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
The UK is the early stages of upgrading its telecommunications infrastructure, with consultations taking place on the cost-effectiveness of implementing different approaches to replacing existing copper wiring with fibre optic cables. |
