Online radio services see rapid growth | | 2009/12/15 | |
Streaming music services are growing rapidly, research from audience measurement company Rajar has shown.
According to the study, last month 4.5 million people in the UK listened to personalised online radio services such as Spotify and Last FM.
This figure has increased from 2.9 million in October last year, prior to the launch of Spotify, a popular site that allows users to listen to music on demand and skip through tracks. In May this year 3.9 million people tuned into online music providers.
Podcasts and on-demand online services such as BBC iPlayer were also found to have increased in popularity, but not to the extent of streaming music sites.
Rajar's Measurement of Internet Delivered Audio Services report, which was based on the responses of 977 people, also discovered that a third of the population, 17.4 million people, have listened to internet radio at some point in their lives. This figure is up from 16.9 million people in May this year.
With the rapid growth in the number of people visiting sites offering streaming music, it is vital that they remain up and running. Website monitoring services are recommended to notify such companies when their valued customers are experiencing difficulties due to site downtime.
