Online Shakespeare game attracts 22 million players | | 2010/02/05 | | An online Shakespeare game has attracted 22 million players worldwide, becoming an instant success.
The game, which is based on Romeo and Juliet, sees the character of Romeo collect flowers for his sweetheart as he travels through Stratford-upon-Avon, the Telegraph reported.
A third of the UK population is estimated to have played the game, which was commissioned by Shakespeare Country tourist site.
Chief executive of Shakespeare Country Phil Hackett estimated only 2.5 million people would play it.
"Since its launch last May it's generated more than a quarter of a million unique visitors to our website every month and a percentage of people are now thinking the Shakespeare Country is an enjoyable and fun place to come and visit," he told the paper.
When sites such as the online Shakespeare one receive such a large number of visits and traffic exceeds what was estimated, website monitoring systems are often used to pick up on any downtime it may experience.
Nickelodeon's site has decided to relaunch its kids' portals for Dora the Explorer and Go Diego Go! to make them even more engaging for visitors after seeing an increase in traffic.
In December 2009 traffic to the Nick Jr website increased by nine per cent on November to a record 27.8 million page views. |
