Owners throwing away outdated laptops | | 2008/06/05 | | The owners of laptops that have become outdated are now likely to throw their machines away if they cannot upgrade, a senior consultant at one leading environmental organisation has pointed out.
Caroline Laitner of Waste Watch has encouraged computer users to buy laptop models which are easily updated.
She urged people to use their machines to the extent of their abilities and to recycle if the must throw away devices.
"It is quite difficult to do that because technology these days is not really designed to be upgraded," said Ms Laitner.
She continued: "The prices have come down and people tend have the view that if they get a couple of years out of their laptop, that is now quite normal."
A recent newcomer to the laptop market was the ASUS Eee PC. The Yahoo Channel reported selling 50 in 210 seconds when the computer was launched last October.
