Parental website monitoring software used in court case | | 2008/08/20 | | A Californian father became so concerned about his daughter's behaviour recently that he installed website monitoring software on her computer, which was originally designed for use in counter-terrorism.
The WebWatcher package from parental monitoring software firm Awareness Technologies was used to gather court-permissible evidence which led to the arrest and conviction of a 39-year-old man who had being having a full sexual relationship with the 15-year-old girl.
The victim's father explained: "I bought WebWatcher software and installed it on my 15 year-old daughter's computer after becoming concerned about changes in her behaviour.
"I was quickly able to get enough information to call the police, who then arrested my daughter's 39 year-old hockey coach."
The man had arranged meetings with the girl using email and had denied all charges but WebWatcher was able to provide proof of the communications which ultimately led to his conviction.
The software is totally invisible once installed on a child's computer and is the only parental monitoring software that is wholly web-based which means that vigilant parents can monitor and control their child's web use remotely.
Paul Kerr, the detective who led the investigation, praised the product and said that it proved to be "a useful tool in this case". |
