Police website 'nicked' | | 2008/09/03 | |
A textbook demonstration in failing to practice what you preach has been noticed by the security firm Sophos which discovered the registration lapse for the domain belonging to the National High-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU).
While the unit was incorporated into the Serious Organised Crime Unit (SOCA) around two years ago, the site still receives a significant amount of traffic every day from people and establishments keen to find information on subjects such as high-profile criminal cases.
This makes the website a valuable piece of virtual real estate and it didn't take long for the domain to be snapped up by German opportunist Uwe Matt.
Sophos has said that the government have shown an extreme level of carelessness and lack of website monitoring.
Senior technology consultant Graham Cluley told PC Pro: "Letting the domain name go like this demonstrates sloppiness on the part of the authorities.
"My first thought was it could be used for malware but the good news is it appears it's not; there's a domain speculator at work here.
Mr Cluley went on to say that it appeared ironic that this branch of the police force, which lectures regularly on the perils of identity theft, has fallen victim to just that.
A police spokesman said that the issue would be examined. |
