Power outage at data centre leaves banks flummoxed | | 2008/05/19 | | Banks using the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) found they were unable to trade late last week when a power outage affected its primary data centre.
Markets were closed for three hours at the Atlanta-based electronic energy exchange base after problems at the primary data centre, which houses a matching engine.
A spokeswoman confirmed: "The ICE electronic markets were closed around 10:30 am following a forced power outage in ICE's primary data centre located in Chicago."
Although the ICE issued brief updates on its website, the cause of the outage has not yet been divulged.
Markets disrupted last Thursday (May 15th) included those in London. After the emergency shutdown, the problem was resolved, allowing trading to resume just before 09:00 BST.
Data centre outages aside, the ICE has seen a busy start to the year, breaking a future exchanges record with 62.5 million contracts in the first quarter of 2008.
