Quick Time exposed to new attack

2008/09/18

A new attack code has been exposed that could exploit a vulnerability in Apple's Quick Time media player.

The new hack for the 7.5.5 version of the software has appeared only a week after developers published an update to remedy several other flaws.

This latest attack code can allegedly be used to crash a web browser using the Quick Time plug-in and will further strengthen the case for website monitoring and UK uptime monitoring services.

Aaron Adams, researcher with the Symantec DeepSight threat notification network, explained that his company "is currently investigating this flaw further to determine the underlying technical details".

However, he warned users that it may be worth disabling the Quick Time plug-in on their browsers until an appropriate solution is found.

Recent research from the Computer Engineering and Networks Laboratory at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology recently suggested that "Apple's security processes and resources cannot cope with the side-effects of the increased popularity of their products".
