Retailers need to 'beef up' their website monitoring | | 2008/09/10 | | The newly released annual security report from NTA Monitor has added its weight to the call for the retail sector to overhaul its web security and to get one step ahead of hackers who use vulnerabilities to gain unauthorised access.
From the ten sectors whose security was tested for weakness, the retail sector was placed third worst but had the largest yearly rise in the average amount of risks at 25 per cent.
These findings are cause for concern as retail is the sector with the highest level of interaction with members of the public.
Technical director at NTA Monitor Roy Hills said: "This lack of attention to security makes retailers vulnerable on many levels.
"High risk vulnerabilities are widely known and actively exploited by hackers leaving many companies susceptible to attacks such as a buffer overflow on a server, malicious code being executed or gaining unauthorised entry to the corporate network."
While specific solutions can be advised to individual problems, NTA Monitor has reasserted some generic tips to businesses with a view to making life more difficult for cyber-criminals.
The company urges that the latest security patches are issued for a reason and should be used.
Also, perpetual and vigilant prevention is seen by the industry as less expensive than internet downtime and staff education on web security issues and communication of updated website monitoring procedures are suggested. |
