Search engine use soared in December 2009 | | 2010/01/27 | | The number of online searches made around the world in December last year increased by 46 per cent when compared to the same month in 2008, according to a new study.
People aged 15 and above carried out 131 billion searches in December alone, the study from comScore discovered.
Jack Flanagan, comScore executive vice president, said: "Search is clearly becoming a more ubiquitous behaviour among Internet users that drives navigation not only directly from search engines but also within sites and across networks."
The study also revealed that most online searches take place in the US, with Americans accounting for 17 per cent of all worldwide searches last month.
As well as discovering that web search is growing at a fast pace, the research also found that search engine Google came out on top, accounting for 66.8 per cent of all searches carried out in December.
Yahoo, which posted positive fourth quarter results this month and expects its revenue to rise in the first three months of 2010, came second with 9.4 billion searches during December.
In light of the recent hacking of the search engine Baidu and increased popularity in carrying online searches, it is becoming more important to put website monitoring services in place to detect any problems occurring on pages visited.
