Security breaches 'on the up' | | 2009/04/20 | | There were more security breaches last year than over the previous four years combined, according to a report.
Verizon Communications found that the retail sector was most likely to be targeted by hackers, accounting for a third of all cases.
The financial services saw the sharpest rise in attacks, with its share doubling to 30 per cent of the total.
Wade Baker, a research executive for Verizon Business Security Solutions, said thieves looking to acquire consumer data to sell on the black market are increasingly turning to large institutions for bigger yields.
"Instead of hitting small one-off shops for small hauls of data we saw them [hackers] targeting large companies with a great deal of data," he added.
Although the bigger companies, like banks and credit card companies are expected to have more sophisticated security, Verizon said their size can sometimes exacerbate the problem.
Mr Baker said that companies need processes to make sure their security policies are actually being followed. One such tool that could be used is website monitoring services.
Verizon is a leading supplier of broadband and other wireline and wireless communication innovations to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers.
