Security patch locks many offline

2008/07/10

Microsoft released its security patch for Domain Name System (DNS) on Tuesday as part of its regular update cycle.

But many users found that they could not access the internet having installed the patch known as KB951748.

The patch was designed to plug a security loophole which could allow hi-tech criminals access to sensitive personal data by redirecting legitimate users to fake websites disguised to look like banking or credit sites.

Users with the ZoneAlarm firewall have been frozen out by the fix to the net's addressing system which causes the anomaly even if the correct address was typed into the browser.

Problems reported included a lack of access to the web and email and, in some cases, antivirus software could no longer benefit from crucial updates.

Web user Chris Rogers told BBC News: "Basically, the [Microsoft] update has crippled both my and my wife's PCs."

Only those whose machines run Windows XP or 2000 were compromised and Mr Rogers discovered that he could reinstate operations by restoring the operating system back to before the patch was introduced.

Conflict with the ZoneAlarm firewall was discovered by many to be the root cause of the problem.ADNFCR-1362-ID-18679680-ADNFCR
