Sensitive data find highlights server security lapse | | 2008/05/07 | | The recent discovery of a host of confidential data made by one security firm has highlighted the importance of server protection.
Israeli group Finjan found confidential medical records, financial data and emails relating to business unprotected on a Malaysian computer network server.
Speaking of the risk associated with such security lapses, Mary Landesman, a researcher at one web security provider, told the San Francisco Chronicle: "It's a domino effect.
She continued: "If [internet criminals] can compromise one site and get to the site owner's system, sometimes they can gain complete access of the hosting server, and all other sites that sit on it are impacted. It's pretty amazing to watch."
According to reports, over 5,388 unique files were uncovered by the Israel-based security firm.
The website attackers had targeted organisations on a global scale, with files on the server coming from countries including UK, US, Germany, France, Spain and Canada.
