Servers set to multiply in data centre expansion | | 2008/05/28 | | The number of servers in data centres run by giants of the IT world is set to see a continued increase over the coming years, says one respected technology news provider.
There has been a noted trend in recent years of major companies such has Hewlett Packard and Google centralising their servers in huge data centres, the Economist has highlighted.
The publication also pointed to research from market research firm IDC which forecasts there will be 15.8 million servers in the US by the year 2010, housed in some of the 7,000 data centres currently operating stateside.
According to the Economist: "Companies have been packing ever more machines into data centres, both to increase their computing capacity and to comply with new data-retention rules.
"As space gets tight and energy costs climb, many firms have begun consolidating and simplifying their computing infrastructure."
Yahoo built a new data centre in Wenatchee, Washington in 2006, renting a space of 45,000 square feet. The firm was attracted by the relatively low cost of electricity.
