SharePoint users 'should tighten up' | | 2009/01/29 | |
Firms utilising Microsoft SharePoint should tighten up their security plans, the results of new research suggest.
Companies are letting users from outside their organisations onto SharePoint systems, along with a whole raft of new threats, a study conducted by Osterman Research on Trend Micro's behalf has revealed.
This danger might even be greater for firms not taking advantage of web monitoring services.
Some 48 per cent of these risk-carrying users were found to be contractors, with 20 per cent customers, figures taken from a survey show.
"While real-time collaboration enables efficient day-to-day business operations, these tools can also increase security risk by opening new pathways for cybercriminals to enter into a corporate network," said Trend Micro's director of messaging security, Dave Lieberman.
"Trend Micro encourages all companies to consider solutions that have SharePoint-specific security capabilities such as Trend Micro's PortalProtect and not rely solely upon general server antivirus products that do not provide complete and adequate protection."
The research targeted organisations in Europe and North America. |
