Small firms need fibre-optics | | 2008/07/08 | | Blair Stewart, Digital Island general manager acknowledges that the NZ $100 (£38) that small businesses pay per month for a "cheap and cheerful" Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) broadband connection is good value.
But he added that there were global concerns over its quality of service, availability guarantees and the lack of alternatives if it malfunctioned, reports the New Zealand Herald.
DSL broadband costs can be cut with local loop unbundling but Digital Island asserts it has found a profitable avenue in companies who don't want to be left helpless when the cheap but occasionally prone copper wire-based service falls over.
The communications firm says demand for a more trustworthy internet service from small-to-medium companies motivated it to develop a service which switches customers' connections to a mobile phone data network if the DSL connection goes down.
Mr Stewart said: "Hopefully if governments get all their initiatives right and we start seeing greater amounts of fibre infrastructure out there and all sorts of other initiatives, then the price of those technologies will come down and businesses will generally be better off.
"But in the meantime there's a bit of a void there," he added.
He went on to say that larger businesses could swallow the cost of fibre-optic internet connections but that the availability in rural areas of most countries was limited and, therefore, out of the reach of most small companies. |
