Steps made to get Brits browsing | | 2008/05/15 | | Steps are being taken to encourage the "final third" of the UK population still not familiar with the internet to get online, according to one education head.
Jon Gamble, director for adults and lifelong learning at the Learning and Skills Council, has detailed the measures being taken by the government to improve the computer literacy of Brits, including proficient internet use.
He said: "The problem is being addressed. UK Online Centres, funded by central government, provide people with access to computers and the internet, as well as advice on using them."
Mr Gamble continued: "The Learning and Skills Council continues to invest millions of pounds each year in funding to support a wide range of IT courses for adults."
The results of an ICM poll published in the Times found that four out of five people in the UK can now open word documents and read emails, with 84 per cent knowing how to use search engines search as Google.
