Ten hour 'network meltdown' in Australia | | 2009/04/07 | |
Parts of Australia were completely cut-off from the rest of the country for ten hours early this morning, leaving many locals unable to go about their business.
Major failures caused a communications black hole, with landlines, mobiles and internet services all going down.
The network has now been restored by Telstra, and is thought to have been caused by a technical fault and not a lack of website monitoring services, as some may have speculated earlier.
Mark Sweet, general manager of Telstra in Darwin, said the problems were in remote locations and difficult to fix.
"I've been up here 20 years and this is unprecedented, no doubt," he added.
The region emerged from the ten-hour black out at around 11am (CST).
A full investigation to get to the bottom of how the communications meltdown occurred will now be carried out by Telstra.
The company is Australia's leading telecommunications and information services provider, supplying 9.6 million fixed-line customers and 9.4 million mobile customers.
