Tesco accelerating virtualisation | | 2008/07/07 | | Tesco has launched a review of its IT procedures in response to chairman, Terry Leahy's aim to halve to company's carbon footprint by 2020.
Around four per cent of Tesco's carbon footprint is caused by IT but the total legacy currently stands at around 4.1 million tonnes per year.
The UK's largest retailer is looking to expand its utilisation of mainframe-based systems and look at application practicality, not just infrastructure, to streamline its operational procedures.
Tesco has learned that Wintel platforms make up 29 per cent of its IT carbon footprint against three per cent for mainframes and 18 per cent for storage systems.
Mike Yorwerth, Tesco's director of group technology and architecture, said: "Big changes will happen between now and the end of 2009.
"We are virtualising our Wintel estate and will also be considering what we could do around the mainframe side given its efficiency."
A virtualisation of the programme would reduce the number of Wintel systems in data centres from approximately 1,500 systems to between 150 and 300.
The move to virtualisation was started nearly two years ago, but the firm is currently pursuing it much more fervently. |
